Saving Your Back!

What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain will affect 4 out of 5 Canadians at some point in time in their life. Understanding the causes of back pain can help you avoid becoming part of this statistic.

  1. Repeated spine bending. You don’t need to lift something heavy to hurt your back. Ever noticed how weeding in a garden can make your back sore? That’s because the repeat stooping stresses your back – even if you’re not lifting anything heavier than a dandelion.
  2. Prolonged spine bending. Sitting is notorious for causing bad posture because it’s difficult to keep the natural curvature of the spine, so you spend most of your time slouched over. Do this for a few hours, and your back won’t be so happy.
  3. Sudden high compressive load on the back. High compressive loads happen when you lift something heavy, or are involved in an impact (e.g. car accident, sport collision, fall). In this case, it’s important to control what you can – use good lifting technique, wear a seatbelt, and be aware of your surroundings.
