What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment that consists of inserting fine, single-use disposable needles into the body at prescribed points to provide relief from a variety of different issues. Practiced for over 3000 years as a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, modern acupuncture is a scientifically-proven safe and effective treatment for a diverse range of ailments.

What Does it Feel Like?

Each person will experience the treatment differently. However, most report feeling some or all of the following sensations: tingling, heat or cold, heaviness, giddiness, and deep relaxation.

What Conditions Can be Treated by Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is can be used to treat a variety of circulatory, endocrine, neurological, and musculoskeletal issues. According to the World Health Organization, these include but are not limited to:

• Musculoskeletal – e.g. frozen shoulder, low back pain, arthritis, tennis elbow
• Women’s health – e.g. prental/postnatal care, menopause, PMS
• Neurological disorders – e.g. headache and migraine, sciatica, Meniere’s disease, paresis following stroke
• Respiratory Complaints – e.g. asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, common cold
• Gastro-intestinal disorders – e.g. hiccough, colitis, diarrhea, gastritis

Other complaints include mental illness, diseases of the eye, gynecological/antenatal conditions, etc. Ask your practitioner about your specific ailments.

Do I Remain Dressed for the Treatment?

Your unique point prescription will determine how much of your body the practitioner needs access to. However, you will remain appropriately draped to your comfort level throughout the treatment. You and your practitioner should have open dialogue in this matter.

After completing an English degree, I spent a year traveling and working before attending the International College of TCM in Vancouver. I completed the program in 2002. Since then I have worked in a variety of capacities, from a private practice working with the general population at Jericho Village to the Downtown Eastside where I work with addiction, injury, HIV and mental illness. In addition I currently work on a study through the University of BC conducting acupuncture on chemically dependant pregnant women at BC Women’s hospital. My prized role, however, is that of parent to my two gorgeous little ones Artemis and Cedar.
