This article was written by our Chiropractor, Dr. Carolyne Nellis

Having benefitted from chiropractic care for two decades, I am happy to be able to offer the same natural, safe and effective care that I have received. My approach to care involves assessing and treating each individual as a whole and creating treatment plans tailored to each individual’s health care goals.

Should I sit or should I stand? Tips for a healthy lifestyle.

“Sitting is the new smoking”. This expression has been very popular in the last few years. More and more people have been looking for ways to restrict their sitting time at work and at home. See below for a few tips to reduce your sitting time, improve your posture, productivity and reduce back pain.

  • Set an alarm every 50 minutes as a reminder to get up, stretch and walk around.  Changing position/posture every 50 minutes will be beneficial in the long run.
  • Get a step counter as motivation to keep moving throughout the day
  • Invest in a sit-stand desk.  The most effective way to use a sit-stand desk is to alternate from sitting to standing every hour.  For example, a quick Google search showed the AnthroDesk: Standing Desk model Sliding Standing Desk Converter to be a good choice.

  • Make sure your workplace is ergonomically friendly and have your office equipment set up properly.
  • If you or your children carry a backpack on a daily basis, this article will help you ensure correct fit.
  • If your work involves a sedentary position, make sure you find some time throughout the day to exercise (walking, running, weight-lifting, sports, etc.) If you experience low back pain after prolonged sitting, tight hip flexors may be contributing. Learn more here.
  • Improving your posture not only improves your physical health, but mental health as well. Read more here.
